๐ŸŽฏ OPTIONAL SUBJECT โ€” Complete Guide to All 48 Optionals

Weight: 500 marks of 1750 (Papers VI & VII, 250 each) โ€” more than any single GS paper. Why it decides ranks: GS scores cluster tightly among serious candidates. Optional scores vary hugely โ€” often 250 to 380 out of 500. That spread frequently decides selection.

โš ๏ธ Always verify syllabi and prescribed texts against the current notification at upsc.gov.in. Syllabi are occasionally revised, and literature prescribed-text lists change periodically.

PART 1 โ€” HOW TO CHOOSE (decision framework)

Score each candidate optional out of 5 on these six criteria. Do not choose on "success rate" statistics โ€” those reflect who chooses the subject, not the subject's merit.

Criterion Question to ask yourself Weight
1. Genuine interest Can I read this for 400+ hours without dread? โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…
2. Background/comfort Did I study this, or can I grasp it without a tutor? โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…
3. Syllabus length Can I finish it in ~4 months and revise it 3 times? โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…
4. GS overlap Does it double as GS/Essay preparation? โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…
5. Material availability Are standard books and past papers easily available? โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…
6. Scoring nature Is it objective/structured, or heavily interpretive? โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Red flags: choosing because a topper chose it ยท choosing on "trending" success rates ยท choosing a technical optional you last studied five years ago ยท choosing a literature because you speak the language ยท choosing something you find boring.

PART 2 โ€” QUICK COMPARISON BY PRIORITY

Shortest syllabus: Philosophy < Anthropology โ‰ˆ Sociology < Public Administration < PSIR < Geography < History Highest GS overlap: PSIR โ‰ˆ Geography โ‰ˆ History > Agriculture โ‰ˆ Sociology โ‰ˆ Law โ‰ˆ Public Administration Most objective/technical: Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering optionals Best for beginners (no background needed): Sociology, Anthropology, PSIR, Philosophy Requires formal degree: Law, Medical Science, Veterinary, Engineering optionals, Commerce, Statistics

PART 3 โ€” HOW TO PREPARE ANY OPTIONAL (universal method)

MONTH 1โ€“3 First reading of standard books; make your own notes
TOPIC-BY-TOPIC, using the OFFICIAL SYLLABUS as your index
MONTH 4 Solve 10โ€“15 years of PYQs; map every question to a syllabus
topic. This reveals the ~40% of syllabus carrying ~80% of marks
 MONTH 5โ€“6 Second reading + answer writing (5 answers/week)
MONTH 7โ€“8 Thinker/theory consolidation; build a SCHOLAR & QUOTE bank
ONGOING 2 full-length optional tests per month before Mains

Universal scoring rules

  1. Use the subject's own vocabulary โ€” the examiner is a specialist and expects technical terms, not GS-style generalities.
  2. Cite scholars/thinkers by name โ€” the biggest differentiator between a 100 and a 140 paper.
  3. Link to contemporary examples where the subject allows.
  4. Use diagrams, flowcharts and maps โ€” mandatory in Geography, valuable in Sociology, Anthropology, sciences.
  5. Follow the syllabus as your index โ€” UPSC picks questions directly from syllabus phrasing.
  6. Attempt every question โ€” a blank scores zero; a decent attempt scores 40โ€“50%.

PART 4 โ€” YOUR NEXT STEPS

  • [ ] Shortlist 2โ€“3 optionals using the framework in Part 1
  • [ ] Download 10โ€“15 years of past papers for each shortlisted subject from upsc.gov.in and read them โ€” the best test of "can I do this for two years?"
  • [ ] Read one chapter of the standard book of each shortlisted candidate
  • [ ] Decide โ€” and then do not change. Switching optionals mid-preparation is among the costliest mistakes in this exam.
  • [ ] Acquire the books and start the topic-by-topic notes described above

Reality check: the optional is ~30% of your study time and ~29% of your merit marks. These files give you the syllabus, booklist and strategy for every optional โ€” enough to choose correctly and start properly. They are not a substitute for the subject books, which you must read in full.
