The topper rule: limited sources, maximum revision. Do not accumulate books; finish and re-read these.
Foundation (NCERTs — read first, always)
- History: NCERT Class 6–12 (esp. Themes in Indian History I–III), Tamil Nadu Class 11 (ancient/medieval).
- Geography: NCERT Class 6–12 (Fundamentals of Physical/Human Geography, India Physical Environment).
- Polity: NCERT Class 9–12 (esp. Indian Constitution at Work).
- Economics: NCERT Class 9–12 (esp. Indian Economic Development, macroeconomics).
- Science: NCERT Class 6–10.
- Art & Culture: NCERT An Introduction to Indian Art (Class 11), Living Craft Traditions.

Current affairs (daily/monthly)
- One newspaper: The Hindu or The Indian Express (read editorials + national/international/economy).
- One monthly magazine (any reputed current-affairs monthly).
- Government sources: Economic Survey, India Year Book (selective), PIB, PRS Legislative summaries, Yojana/Kurukshetra (selective).
Reference documents (skim, don't memorize)
- Constitution of India (bare text for key articles).
- Economic Survey & Budget highlights (annual).
- Relevant government portals for schemes.
How to use the booklist (critical)
- NCERTs first, cover-to-cover, before any standard book.
- One standard book per subject — read, make short notes, then re-read the notes, not the book.
- PYQs alongside each subject to see what UPSC actually asks (see
../PRELIMS/PYQ-Analysis.md). - Revise 5× over the cycle; the 5th read should take a fraction of the 1st.
- Don't chase new books in the last 4 months — consolidate what you have.
The person who reads one book five times beats the person who reads five books once. Depth and revision, not breadth, produce Rank 1.
